Huang Wen Yong Died at 60: Veteran MediaCorp artiste Huang Wenyong, best known for his role as “Ah Shui” in Channel 8’s period drama “The Awakening” died on Saturday. He passed away from lymphoma on Saturday in hospital.

According to a report by xinmsn, the Malaysia-born actor died at 5pm with his wife, son and daughter by his side.

The MediaCorp veteran, who had been in and out of the hospital for treatment in recent months, checked into Singapore General Hospital about a week ago, said his manager.

Fellow Singapore celebrities were quick to express their sadness.

Actor Tay Ping Hui said in a micro blog post that he learnt a lot from Huang who took “acting seriously” and never hesitated to “guide the newcomers.”

He said his death “is a great loss to the Singapore television industry”, ending his post with “Rest in peace big brother, Wen Yong. You will be forever in our hearts.”

Actor George Young also expressed his sadness over Huang’s death, recalling that Huang had been extremely kind to him from the moment he stepped on set for the first scene of the drama “Joys of Life”.

Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng also mourned the loss of the veteran, remembering him as “a very friendly and humble person, [with] no airs at all.”

Concerns over Huang’s health first surfaced when he looked frail and skinny during Channel 8’s 30th Drama Anniversary Show last November.

However, he clarified that his haggard appearance was the result of stomach flu. Just last month, the “Joys of Life” star assured fans he was doing well and thanked them for their well wishes.

Huang joined the-then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in 1980 and was best known for his role as Chinese migrant “Ah Shui” in Channel 8 period drama “The Awakening”.

In his over 30-year career with MediaCorp, he acted in over 100 Chinese dramas and sitcoms and won numerous awards including “Special Achievement Award” at the 1997 Star Awards and “Top 10 Favourite Male Artist Award” at the 2011 Star Awards.

There will be a five-day wake for the actor.
